rabbittransit Introduces New Fare Collection System for Fixed Route Service

rabbittransit Introduces New Fare Collection

System for Fixed Route Service

Harrisburg, PA — rabbittransit is excited to announce a major upgrade to its fare

collection system with the launch of rabbitPAY, going live July 21, 2026. The new

system will be available for Capital Region, Gettysburg, Shippensburg, and York fixed

route services, as well as rabbitEXPRESS, Capital Region Commuter Routes, and Stop

Hopper services. rabbitPAY offers riders a modern, seamless transit experience across

rabbittransit’s service areas.

rabbitPAY introduces a smart card and mobile-based payment system, making

boarding faster, more convenient, and more flexible than ever before. Riders will be

able to load reusable smart cards through Ticket Vending Machines, the rabbitPAY

Mobile app, the rabbittransit website, or in person at customer service offices.

“rabbitPAY makes riding transit as easy as tapping your phone or smart card,”

said Richard Farr, Executive Director of rabbittransit. “Our goal is to remove barriers

and make public transportation even more convenient, accessible, and user-friendly.

Whether you're commuting to work, heading to an appointment, or exploring the region,

rabbitPAY provides a simple and seamless way to pay for your trip.”

Key features of rabbitPAY include:

Smart Card Technology: Riders simply tap and go when boarding the

bus.

Fare Capping: Pay as you go without worrying about overpaying — once

you've reached the cost of a daily or monthly pass, rides are free for the

rest of that period.

Multiple Reload Options: Load your card or account anytime via app,

online, at a machine, or in person.

Seamless Regional Travel: Improved Fare integration between service

areas.

In preparation for the launch, rabbittransit staff will offer various public

engagement opportunities and community events in the weeks leading up to July 21 to

help riders sign up, answer questions, and make the transition to rabbitPAY as smooth

as possible. Riders are asked to visit www.rabbittransit.org for more information

regarding times and locations of these upcoming events.

As part of the fare collection system upgrade, a modest fare increase will also

take effect on July 21 — the first fare adjustment to these services since 2018 —

ensuring continued investment in safe, reliable, and modern public transit services. The

fare changes affect Capital Region, Gettysburg, Shippensburg, and York fixed route

service; rabbitEXPRESS; Capital Region Commuter Routes; Stop Hopper; and shared

ride service’s Persons with Disabilities (PWD) and ADA Complementary Paratransit

(ADA) program rates.
