PUBLIC INVITATION TO UNION PARK PAVILION RIBBON CUTTING
 
Hanover, PA – The Borough of Hanover Department of Parks and Recreation and the Hanover Kiwanis Club are pleased to invite the public to a ribbon cutting ceremony for a newly constructed pavilion at Union Park, located at 629 West Hanover Street, Hanover, PA 17331. The event will take place on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at 5:30 p.m.
 
The 30’ x 40’ covered pavilion—located adjacent to the new playground—was made possible through the Hanover Kiwanis Club’s 2025 Signature Project, which brought together the generosity of several local businesses including Burkentine Builders and Mark Austin Builders which donated significant time and materials. Other contributors include Denise Dunn, Famous Hot Weiner, Garrick Jeweler, Hanover Auto Team, Hanover Dental Care, Kenworthy Funeral Home and Crematory, McSherrystown Home Association, Stew Ells in memory of Esther Ells, Tom and Julie Moul, Trone Rental Properties and Wingert Family.
 
“This is what Hanover Kiwanis is all about—making a lasting difference in the lives of our local youth and working as a team to strengthen our hometown community,” stated Club President Brandon Wingert “I’m very proud that our Club members and financial resources came together with the Hanover Borough, Mike Burkentine and Josh Austin to complete this needed signature project. The new Kiwanis Pavilion at Union Park will provide families, children, and community groups with a welcoming space to gather for many years to come.”
 
Borough Manager Margie Lewis expressed appreciation to the club saying, “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Hanover Kiwanis Club for their generous donation of a pavilion at Union Park. This donation enhances the community spirit and serves as a cherished gathering place for all. Partnerships like this are what make Hanover the vibrant and thriving community it is, fostering collaboration and support that enriches the lives of all our residents.”

Formerly known as West Hanover Street Park, Union Park holds historical significance as the site of a key event during the Battle of Hanover in 1863, where Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart was forced to retreat, and a Confederate flag was captured. The new pavilion, situated in the northwest corner of the park, complements recent upgrades to the playground equipment completed in 2024. This past summer, the park hosted several community events as part of the 2025 Summer Playground Program, coordinated by the Borough’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Library Services in partnership with the Hanover Area YMCA.
 
With approximately forty members, the Hanover Kiwanis Club regularly undertakes service projects such as Adopt-a-Highway cleanups, Hanover Trolley Trail tree planting, decorating the square at Christmas and painting playground equipment throughout the Borough. Their annual pecan and blueberry sales fund contributions to numerous youth-focused organizations across the community.
 
Kiwanis International is a global organization of over 600,000 volunteers in more than 80 countries.
