GRANT AWARDED TO BOROUGH FOR CONSUMPTIVE USE MITIGATION PROJECT

May 1, 2024

Hanover, Pa. – The Borough of Hanover has received a Consumptive Use Mitigation Grant for $500,840 funded by the Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC) to be used for necessary updates and repairs to the dam intake tower at Lawrence Baker Sheppard Dam. In addition to improving water capture and outflow during dry periods, the repairs will allow the Borough to respond more quickly during heavy rain events, all resulting in a reduction of rate increases for water customers.

“These dollars for Hanover Borough will go a long way toward improving the water dam,” said grant supporter Rep. Kate Klunk (R-Hanover). “This will allow the Borough to quickly respond [to water incidents], improving public safety while enabling our municipal officials to better control water outflow during drought periods.” Commenting on the importance of the grant, Borough Manager Margie Lewis stated, “We cannot understate the value of this grant. With it we are able to leverage citizen tax dollars for essential maintenance and prudent stewardship of our resources.” She added, “We appreciate Rep. Klunk’s advocacy. Her advocacy contributed to a successful grant application. We are very grateful for her commitment to the Borough.”

Consumptive Use Mitigation Project grants are funded by fees paid to the SRBC through regulated programs and are issued for innovative projects that strengthen the water resiliency of the Susquehanna Basin and that improve water availability and quality during low-flow periods. The SRBC is a federal/interstate governmental agency responsible for protecting and managing the water resources within the 27,500 square-mile Susquehanna River Basin. The largest tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, the Susquehanna River originates at Otsego Lake near Cooperstown, New York and travels 444 until it empties into the bay. It provides 50% of the bay’s freshwater flow and is the longest, commercially non-navigable river in North America.
