Martin Library Posts Call for Teen Art for May Exhibit
Martin Library in York is posting a call for art for its upcoming “Do My Feelings Matter?” Teen Art Exhibit. Open to teen artists, ages 12 – 18, in York and Adams County, digital renderings of original artshould be submitted for consideration by Friday, April 11. Applicants will be notified by Friday, April 18 if their art has been selected for inclusion in this juried show. Guidelines are available at yorklibraries.org and at library locations.
“Martin Library is excited to showcase the talents of so many young artists,” says Martin Library Director Mina Edmondson. “This event presents a wonderful opportunity for teens to express their feelings using the visual arts. Young and old alike will be awed by the talent that is in our community.”
According to Edmondson, four York County library locations are hosting open studio sessions to provide interested teens with opportunities to work on their art at the library. The open studios will be held from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6 at Guthrie Memorial Library in Hanover; 6:00 –7:30 p.m. Monday, March 10 at Glatfelter Memorial Library in Spring Grove; 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Saturday, March 15 at Village Library in Jacobus; and 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18 at Kreutz Creek Library in Hellam. Teen artists can bring their own supplies or use what is provided to create their submissions. Art can also be completed at home.
The opening reception for the Teen Art Exhibit will be held Friday, May 2 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend the festivities inside the library at 159 E. Market St. in York. The exhibit runs through Friday, May 16 during regular operating hours.
The Teen Art Exhibit is kicking off a new series of Community Conversations that explores current topics of public interest and provides opportunity for dialogue. The first event will be held Sunday, May 4 at MartinLibrary. Inspirational speaker Jennifer Foxworthy will moderate a teen and community member panel discussion on the topic “Do My Feelings Matter?” Teen Emotional and Social Wellbeing. The Community Conversations series, including the Teen Art Exhibit, is made possible by the support of the City of YorkHuman Relations Commission, as well as the Cultural Alliance and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
“As part of YCL’s Strategic Plan, our libraries are focused on providing local teens with opportunities to share their viewpoints with the community,” says York County Libraries President Robert F. Lambert. “These program experiences help teens develop civic and social literacy skills that will bolster success in school and the workforce.”
Martin Library, located at 159 E. Market Street in York, PA, has served the community since 1935. As a branch of York County Libraries, it is recognized as a PA Forward Gold Star library for its outstanding programs and resources. Martin Library was the first to receive the Library of the Year Award from the Pennsylvania Library Association.
