Martin Library Hosts Second Program in Community Conversation Series
Panel Discussion Addresses Perception of Safety in York City and York County
YORK, PA – Martin Library will host its next Community Conversation, “Does My Safety Matter?” on Thursday, November 13. The discussion will address perceptions of safety in York City and York County and will be moderated by Jennifer C. Foxworthy of Inspirationally Speaking. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the program begins promptly at 6:00 p.m. and runs until 8:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend the panel discussion, followed by a light supper, at the library, 159 E. Market St., in York. Registration is not required to attend the free event.
According to Martin Library Director Mina Edmondson, safety can mean many things depending on the context, and the panel will address many of these aspects. Questions will range from “What is actually safe and what is actually dangerous?” to “What does a safe and thriving downtown York look like to you in five years?”
Foxworthy will incorporate audience panelist responses and questions during the Community Conversation. The panelists represent a variety of professional fields. They include Samantha Dorm, York County Safety Collaborative Steering Committee; Jamie Noerpel, York County Safety Collaborative; Sarah O’Brien, Downtown, Inc.; and Pamela White, York County Agency on Aging.
“Welcoming our community into Martin Library to discuss topics that are vital to them is important, and public safety is an issue that warrants our attention,” says Edmondson. Leading up to this event, the library is offering a self-defense class for adults from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 20. Self-Defense Academy Instructor Scott Palermo will share basic actions one can take to defend themselves in an unsafe situation. The class is free; however, registration is required at events.yorklibraries.org.
“Libraries serve as a community connector, bridging understanding and facilitating positive change,” says York County Libraries President Robert F. Lambert. “We are fortunate to have a vibrant network of professionals and organizations that truly care about the welfare of our residents and the community as a whole.”
Martin Library, located at 159 E. Market Street in York, PA, has served the community since 1935, and is a branch of York County Libraries.
