YMCA of the Roses Announces New President and CEO, Michael A. Smith
The YMCA of the Roses is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael A. Smith as its new President and CEO, effective August 1, 2025. Smith will succeed Larry Richardson, who is retiring after 31 years of dedicated leadership.
Smith has served the YMCA of the Roses in a variety of leadership roles over the past eight years, most recently as Vice President of Administration, where he oversaw fundraising, human resources, marketing, and IT. Prior to this role, Smith served as Director of Operations in Lancaster and as Branch Executive Director in Shrewsbury. A lifelong nonprofit professional, Smith previously worked as Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of York & Adams Counties and held fundraising positions within the United Way system.
Born and raised in York, Mike earned both his bachelor's degree and MBA from York College of Pennsylvania. He is deeply committed to the YMCA’s mission and the communities it serves. Mike is married to his wife, Alesha, and together they are raising three children. He is an active community volunteer, youth sports coach, and has served on several local nonprofit boards. Grounded in his Christian faith, Mike views his work with the YMCA as a calling to serve others and strengthen the community.
Smith brings a steady, mission-focused leadership style, with a strong emphasis on team-building, operational effectiveness, and long-term sustainability.
Reflecting on this new chapter, Mike shared his gratitude and excitement: “I’m humbled and honored to step into the role of President and CEO of the YMCA of the Roses,” said Smith. “This organization has shaped countless lives in our community—including my own family—and I’m committed to carrying our mission forward with humility and purpose. I look forward to working alongside our exceptional staff, members, and community partners to strengthen our foundation, expand our impact, and ensure the Y remains a place of belonging and opportunity for all."
Larry Richardson, who has led the organization since 1994, shared enthusiasm for the organization’s future under new leadership.
“I have been blessed to have been called to the work of the YMCA of the Roses these past 31 years,” said Richardson. “As now Mike is being called to this position, I am confident the mission and purpose of the YMCA of the Roses will flourish under his leadership.”
James Sanders, Chair of the Board of Directors, expressed strong confidence in the new CEO’s ability to lead the organization forward.
“After a comprehensive search process, the Board is proud to welcome Mike Smith as our next President and CEO,” said Sanders. “Mike brings a deep understanding of our mission, a strong vision for the future, and the leadership qualities we need in this next chapter. His experience, integrity, and passion for the Y’s values made him the clear choice.”
The organization is grateful for Larry’s leadership and is excited to begin this next chapter under Mike’s guidance.
