Martin Library invites York County Artists to Submit Proposals Art Installation to Feature Iconic Library Window

Martin Library is seeking proposals from York County artists to design a unique art installation using one of its iconic windows. The deadline for submissions is Friday, August 1. The art will be unveiled on Friday, October 3 during a celebration of the 90th Anniversary of Martin Library’s Opening.

According to Martin Library Director Mina Edmondson, the library is looking for an art piece that envisions the future of Martin Library in York while honoring its history. “During a recent renovation, one of the library’s original arched windows was saved,” says Edmondson. “With the help of a local artist, we want to repurpose the frame for a new art installation in our historic main lobby.”

Details for submitting a proposal for art can be found on the library’s website at yorklibraries.org/york-martin. An artist will be selected by mid-August. A limited budget is available for this project, which needs to be completed by late September. The library will assist with delivery of the window to the artist’s studio and transportation back to the library for installation.

Martin Library first opened its doors to the community on Halloween in 1935. Dressed in costume, residentsstepped through the Market Street doors into the lobby and library. This same entrance and lobby are used today, so it is only fitting to place the art precisely where the library’s past, present, and future intersect,” says York County Libraries President Robert F. Lambert. It will frame the library’s decades of service and dedication to the community for years to come.

Located at 159 E. Market Street in York, PA, Martin Library has served the community for 90 years. As a branch of York County Libraries, it is recognized as a PA Forward Gold Star library for its outstanding programs and resources. Martin Library was the first to receive the Library of the Year Award from the Pennsylvania Library Association
