April is the official “Month of the Military Child.” Easterseals Western and Central Pennsylvania (ESWCPA) celebrates military and veteran children by kicking off their 13th season of Project Beacon, April 5-7 at Camp Victory in Millville, PA. Project Beacon’s second retreat takes place October 18-20. Project Beacon, created in collaboration with the Pennsylvania National Guard is a weekend retreat for children and youth of military personnel and veterans. Participants range in age from 5-17. Since the retreat is hosted by Easterseals Western and Central Pennsylvania, staff can accommodate children and youth with disabilities. Project Beacon is free of charge thanks to funding from supporters including Highmark Blue Shield, United Concordia, and Pennsylvania National Guard Child and Youth Program. Pennsylvania is home to the third largest Army National Guard in the country, with more than 20,000 members. For some children and youth Project Beacon is their only opportunity to meet peers facing similar challenges.
One parent commented, “Military camp with Easterseals has been a wonderful addition for our family. Being around kids living through similar situations helps the kids talk about it which in turn helps them to work through the stress that others just don't understand.”

Project Beacon is full of activities to help build lasting friendships, develop team building, and foster leadership skills. Activities include group games, wall climbing, zip lining, low ropes challenges, boating, fishing, archery, nature activities, and guest speakers.
