YORK HOLOCAUST TORAH UNVEILED
York JCC to host Torah from Holocaust

YORK, PA, September 6, 2022 – The York JCC unveiled the relocation of the Torah from Temple Beth Israel to the York JCC. The Holocaust Torah, number 1381, is one of the 1564 Czech Memorial Sifre Torah, and was part of a collection of treasures looted by the Nazis during the 1939-1945 war from desolated Jewish communities of Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia.

The Torah was acquired in 1991 from the Memorial Scrolls Trust in London and displayed inside Ohev Sholom, where it remained for 1.5 decades before relocating to Temple Beth Israel for 1.5 decades.

On Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, April 27, 2022, the Torah was relocated to the York JCC lobby in order for the Torah to have a greater presence to the entire York Community.

The York Community is invited to visit the York JCC to view the relocated Holocaust Torah, to learn more about its historical treasure of history – both a tragedy of humanity – and hope for humanity. More information and an educational video can be found on the York JCC website.

The York Jewish Community Center creates opportunities for everyone, inspires relationships, builds a community of well-being, and enhances Jewish communal life.
