York County Libraries are looking for community members to take the Beanstack Winter Reading Challenge from January 1 – 31, 2021. Sponsored by Simon & Schuster’s Books Like Us program, the fourth annual challenge encourages community members of all ages to read in support of libraries and schools. A total of 344,000 readers nationwide joined the January 2020 challenge, collectively logging over 5 million minutes of reading.
This will be the second time that York County Libraries are participating. “We were blown away by our community of readers last year,” says York County Libraries Digital Services Librarian Katherine Dannehl. “We had 464 active readers and 414,000 minutes read – over 40 times our original goal! Everything kicks off on January 1 and this year we are again challenging our York County participants to each read 500 minutes or more to help us reach our local goal of 400,000 minutes. Keeping track is easy on the Beanstack app, which our libraries have used for youth programs since 2017.”
The challenge is open to all ages. The only thing needed is a free York County Libraries card; available online at yorklibraries.org and at all library locations. Community members who already have a library card can go ahead and sign up to participate in the challenge at yorklibraries.beanstack.org according to Dannehl.
As part of the upcoming Winter Reading Challenge, Simon & Schuster will award prizes including book collections and virtual author visits by bestselling and acclaimed authors including Cozbi Cabrera, Sharon Draper, Stuart Gibbs, Stephen Graham Jones, Hena Khan, Debbie Ohi, Christina Hammonds Reed and Rebecca Roanhorse to top-performing libraries and schools across the country. “I am feeling confident that we will meet and exceed our goal once more,” adds Dannehl. “As we stay at home with our families this winter, this will be a fun way to escape into reading.” Community members with questions about the challenge should go to https://yorklibraries.beanstack.org/contact.
