York County Libraries Announce Poetry Contest Winners

York County Libraries have announced the winners of the 33rd Annual “A Celebration of Poetry” contest.  Students from York and Adams County submitted original poems and twenty-four winners were selected. 
 
“With a long history of encouraging creative expression and writing in youth, the 2022 Celebration of Poetry contest received 200 entries,” says York County Libraries Youth Services Director Jaclyn Cassidy.  “The quality and variety of poems was remarkable. I hope youth continue to find inspiration in the library by reading the winning poems and the other great works that fill our shelves.”
 
Winners were selected in the following age groups: Grades 1-2, Grades 3-4, Grades 5-6, Grades 7-8, Grades 9-10, and Grades 11-12. They were judged on organization and overall impact, poetry elements, grammar, usage, mechanics, and spelling by a panel of local educators and writers. This year’s judges included Travis Kurowski, Lori Leckrone, Jennifer Nesbitt,Ted Nesbitt, JJ Sheffer, Lexi Spino, Carol Clark Williams, and The Rev. Carla Christopher Wilson.

First & Second Grade
First Place: “Snow Is Magical” by Sophia Orwick, Bermudian Springs Elementary School

“I’d like to congratulate the 2022 Celebration of Poetry winners and applaud all of the York and Adams County students who entered this year’s contest,” says York County Libraries President Robert F. Lambert. “There was a lot of competition, and the judges had some very tough decisions to make.” 
York County Libraries include 13 libraries that provide the latest in print and digital information, best sellers, Wi-Fi, digital story times, online book discussions and 80 databases. Their extensive collection includes over 642,000 items and one million digital library materials for loan. All are available for free with a York County Libraries card.  Community members without a card are invited to request one at yorklibraries.org at no cost.
