York County Libraries and PeoplesBank Celebrate First Grade Readers
This is the first year for Fredericks as the designated GOAL author. Children’s authors Tedd Arnold, Will Hillenbrand, Peter Catalanotto and Lindsay Barrett Georg have preceded him in this role. Each featured author is involved for three years; coming to York to inspire kids to read, draw, and learn from the world around them. Fredericks is Professor Emeritus of Education at York College of Pennsylvania where he taught both teacher education and writing courses. He is the author of more than 160 books. His award-winning children’s books include “Desert Night, Desert Day”, “A is for Anaconda: A Rainforest Alphabet”, and “Tall Tall Tree.”
“Reading is that game-changing skill that equips children for learning,” says York County Libraries President Robert F. Lambert. “GOAL essentially rolls out the welcome mat for children and their families to come discover the wealth of opportunities our libraries have to offer at a very family-friendly price, free.” York County Libraries and PeoplesBank started the GOAL program in 2008 to get a library card in the hands of every first grader in York County. The initiative encourages children and their parents to visit the library to discover the array of books, programs, and resources available.
York County Libraries include 13 libraries that provide the latest in print and digital information, best sellers, Wi-Fi, digital story times, online book discussions and 80 databases. Their extensive collection of over 700,000 items includes over 80,000 digital library materials for loan. All are available for free with a York County Libraries card. Community members without a card are invited to request one at yorklibraries.org at no cost.
