The York Academy Regional Charter School’s Board of Trustees met on Monday, February 25, 2019 and took action to appoint Ms. Angela Sugarek to the position of Chief Executive Officer, effective July 1, 2019. The Academy’s current Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Dennis Baughman, is retiring on June 30, 2019.
Ms. Sugarek earned a Bachelor of Science degree in History and Mathematics from Eastern New Mexico University and a Master of Educational Administration from the University of Texas at Austin. Since 2013, she has served as a principal in the Houston, TX Independent School District, working with International Baccalaureate (IB) programming at the Durham Elementary School and the James Hogg Middle School. She was honored as the Texas PTA Elementary Principal of the Year in 2015.
As a result, Ms. Sugarek has accumulated a deep understanding of and extensive experience with IB programming and has developed the skills necessary to move the York Academy to full participation as a K-12 International Baccalaureate World School. Several of her passions are relationship and community building, working with data, forming pathways to academic excellence and supporting her faculty.
Ms. Sugarek notes, “It is an honor to join the York Academy family at such an exciting time in the school’s development. As an experienced International Baccalaureate educator, I am thrilled to lead the York Academy Regional Charter School to full authorization and implementation of the IB continuum.” She adds, “As an advocate for public education, I am eager to continue the work of Dr. Baughman in developing meaningful school choice for families in York County and throughout Pennsylvania.”
The Board of Trustees believes that Ms. Sugarek has the vision, talents and competencies appropriate to continue the York Academy's drive to becoming a world-class school promoting and providing for student excellence at all levels.
The York Academy Regional Charter School is a nonprofit, tuition-free public charter school that educates nearly 800 diverse students (K-9th grade) via the rigorous, world-class International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. Founded in 2011, the Academy is chartered by Central York, York City and York Suburban School Districts. Students from eight other districts are also represented. In August 2018, York Academy opened a progressive Upper School at the site of the former Pennsupreme Building in Downtown York. Each year, a grade level will be added until the Academy is fully K-12 at the beginning of the 2021-22 school year.
The York Academy offers a small school community with challenging academics and innovative art, music and design/engineering programming. In addition, the Academy is the only school in York County - and one of just four in the state - authorized to offer both the International Baccalaureate Primary Years (K-5) and Middle Years (6-10) Programmes. The school is currently a candidate for the intense Diploma Programme (11 & 12), which is respected by leading universities across the globe.*
The IB programmes focus on teaching students to think critically and independently, and how to inquire with care and logic. The IB prepares students to succeed in a world where facts and fiction merge in the news, and where asking the right questions is a crucial skill that will allow them to flourish long after they’ve left York Academy. The IB curriculum is shared in almost 5,000 schools globally in over 150 countries around the world.
