UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Brings Latest Imaging Equipment to Central Pennsylvania

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is the first cancer care network in central Pennsylvania to offer PET-CT Simulation, one of the most powerful cancer diagnostic tools that allows for the most precise radiation treatments for patients.

“Accuracy is vital to ensuring high quality radiation treatments,” said David Barron, MD, radiation oncologist for UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. “Using PET-CT Simulation, we can better target the cancerous cells and preserve the functioning of the surrounding organs and tissues.”

PET-CT is short for positron emission tomography with computerized tomography. These tests help providers identify the type of cancer, its location, and the growth of cancer cells.

The new scanner allows some patients to get a PET scan immediately after their CT simulation, while they are in the same treatment position. This reduces the variation and ensures that the most precise radiation treatment plan can be delivered. For most patients, this PET/CT fusion procedure takes approximately three-to-four hours.

“We believe everyone should be able to have access to the latest breakthroughs in cancer technology. We are dedicated to hiring the best experts and investing in the latest technology and resources to provide these services to people who could benefit from it,” said Philip Guarneschelli, president, UPMC Pinnacle.

PET-CT Simulation is performed at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at the Outpatient Services building located on the UPMC Memorial campus, 1703 Innovation Drive, York, PA 17408.
