The Martin Library Honors Committee has announced its selection of Georg Sheets as its Fall 2019 Martin Honors honoree. They will recognize Sheets for his outstanding service to the library and the community on Sunday, October 20 at 2 p.m. The public is invited to attend the event which will be held at Martin Library in York.
Sheets has served as the planned giving officer for Martin Library and York County Libraries (YCL) since 2004. In the spirit of Martin Library’s namesake, Milton Martin, Sheets has inspired and helped library supporters create their own legacies through philanthropic gift planning and membership in the library’s Legacy Society.  They share a common goal: to preserve the library for future generations.
“Georg’s unwavering passion for the library is apparent from the moment you meet him,” says York County Libraries President Robert F. Lambert.  “He started coming to the library as a boy and his dedication to Martin Library and YCL will help ensure that community members will have access to libraries for generations to come.”
He has served as a member of the Martin Library Honors Committee since 2000 and became its staff liaison when he was hired in 2004.  Committee members surprisedSheets with the announcement that he was selected as the Fall 2019 Martin Honors honoree. “We wanted to recognize Georg for his tireless efforts to guide the committee through the selection process,” says committee chair Robert Cox. “He assumes responsibility for assembling the various parts required to make each event a resounding success.”  The committee includes Brenda Elby, Lynne Danyo, Don Dellinger, Jr., Robert F. Lambert, Donna Pullo, and Lori Rene Weyant.
In addition to his work with York County Libraries, Sheets is a historian, author, and editor.  He is the author of many books on York County.  They include “York County: To the Setting of the Sun: An Illustrated History”, “The Grand Review: The Civil War Continues to Shape America”, and “Facts and Folklore of York County, Pennsylvania”. He also contributed substantially to research on William C. Goodridge and his family. That effort led to the establishment of the William C. Goodridge Freedom Center and Underground Railroad Museum.  History buffs may also recognize Sheets from his walking tours of historic downtown York.
Sheets is the editor-in-chief of “ShowcaseNow!” magazine, a multi-media publication which covers the arts, culture, heritage and tourism of nine counties in southcentral Pennsylvania. He attended West York Area Senior High School and received his Bachelor of Art degree at Youngstown State University in Ohio. He did graduate work at the Pennsylvania State University and studied in France.
The honors ceremony will feature several guest speakers.  They include his co-writer of two books Ellie Shoemaker, his brother-in-law Rodney Knaub and niece Beth Shoff and actor Kelly Summerford.   A reception will follow the tribute.  A key component of the Martin Honors event is to establish a perpetual fund to purchase books in the name of the honoree. Contributions are welcome by donating securely online at donate.yorklibraries.org or by mail to Martin Library Honors Fund, 159 East Market Street, York, PA 17401.   Community members interested in attending the October 20th celebration honoring Sheets should RSVP online at donate.yorklibraries.org or by phoning Bridget Vigue at (717) 849-6979.
