High School Basketball Returns to WOYK Tonight!
It’s Opening Night in the YAIAA as the 2021 High School Basketball season tips off with a three-game week on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK.
The delayed start of the basketball season marks the return of live, local sports coverage on WOYK for the first time since the Central York Panthers battled for the state football championship in November, and WOYK’s opening slate of games features a slew of potential contenders with coverage each night presented by WellSpan Sports Medicine.
WOYK General Manager Darrell Henry returns to the booth where he is joined by former Central York boys basketball two-time championship-winning coach Kevin Schieler to bring local listeners all the live action of the biggest matchups this season.
The season gets underway tonight as the Northeastern Bobcats visit the 2-0 Red Lion Lions who claimed a pair of non-league victories over the weekend. On Wednesday, the Bobcats play their home opener as Northeastern hosts rival York High. On Friday, defending champion Central visits New Oxford in a rematch of last year’s league title game.
The rivalry matchups continue the following week as Central visits York High on Tuesday, January 19, and West York travels to York Suburban on Friday, January 22.
Each broadcast is slated for an airtime of approximately 7:15 p.m. once warmups get underway at the conclusion of the competing schools’ JV contest.
WOYK already has local listeners covered for the start of the season with in-depth team-by-team previews in the “High School Basketball Spotlight” presented by WellSpan Sports Medicine. WOYK broadcaster Ray Jensen breaks down the teams and players of the 2021 York-Adams League with additional previews still to be aired and posted in the days ahead: High School Basketball Spotlight presented by WellSpan Sports Medicine
In addition to the live over-the-air broadcast on both FM & AM radio, games can be heard via the live stream at 989woyk.com or on the go by downloading “The New WOYK” mobile app.
WOYK will air at least two games per week throughout the regular season which is scheduled through February, leading into the PIAA District III playoffs and state playoffs in March.
