Downtown York bursts to life each spring with colorful flowering plantings – and the community can again help beautify city streets by supporting Downtown Inc during Give Local York’s second annual Big Give Day on Friday, May 3.

For the second straight year, Downtown Inc will raise funds to facilitate flower plantings throughout the city’s business district. In 2018, Downtown Inc raised more than $13,000 for flower plantings thanks to the generosity of 113 individual donors.

“By inspiring thousands of people to action, Give Local York offers a beautiful reminder that we’re all stewards of our community,” said Elaine Bonneau, Director of Downtown Inc. “Taken collectively, small gestures accumulate into the biggest single day of giving in York County. Likewise, we hope that the annual flower plantings around Downtown York offer inspiration for others to take small steps to beautify our city and brighten our community.”

An affiliate of the York County Economic Alliance and York’s downtown improvement organization, Downtown Inc is one of the primary funders and facilitators of the flower plantings. The organization partners with the Garden Club of York and the City of York’s Parks Department each spring to steward the plantings. As a result, more than 90 planters around downtown are filled with colorful blooms.

The plantings are part of Downtown Inc’s ongoing placemaking and beautification efforts that improve the cleanliness, attractiveness and walkability of Downtown York for residents and visitors. Other projects including facilitating the mulching of downtown tree wells, running a year-round Clean-Up Crew, driving forward strategic lighting projects and more.

Giving to Downtown Inc during Give Local York's Give Day will directly offset costs associated with the flower plantings. Donating as little as $25 can help fund the flowers and needed care for one planter for one month.

To help fund the flower plantings, Give Local York donors can visit www.GiveLocalYork.org on May 3 and search for “Downtown Inc” to find the organization’s page and donate. Give Local York donors may also choose to more broadly support Downtown Inc by joining its Friends program on Friday, May 3, when a stretch pool of funds allows gifts to go further.

Anyone who donates to Downtown Inc during Give Local York also will be eligible to receive 50 percent off one appetizer at The Left Bank Restaurant & Bar in the month of May.

Friday’s Big Give Day will mark a full day of celebrations across Downtown York. Downtown Inc will start the day by handing out white roses, courtesy of Chas. A. Schaefer Flowers. Then, from 5-9 p.m., dozens of nonprofits will fill Beaver Street and Continental Square for Give Local York, which coincides with May’s First Friday celebration. Downtown Inc has also partnered with Community Progress Council to offer a full evening of live entertainment on Continental Square – with all performers participating in Give Local York.

Interested individuals may also come to the Downtown Inc office at 2 E. Market St., in Downtown York on May 3, and staff will assist them in making their Give Local York donation.

Give Local York is a 24-hour online giving spree that will benefit more than 300 York County nonprofits. The overall goal is to raise $3 million on May 3 during a community-wide celebration that will culminate with the revealing of the final total at midnight.
