Director of Development and Sustainability
Steam into History is an excursion railroad that makes time travel possible! It's an authentic experience where you can meet presidents and generals, experience the Wild West, enjoy the spirit of the season any time of year, and literally ride along the very rails that helped build and save our nation. It's a breathtaking journey through gorgeous countryside that brings out the child in all of us.
Steam Into History is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, educational, charitable organization, located in New Freedom, PA. The historic attraction, with a replica 1860s steam locomotive and a GP9 diesel engine, hosts excursions that educate, entertain and enlighten.
We are seeking an experienced funding and development professional to plan, develop, implement, and maintain private and public sector funding programs to ensure sustainability and to enhance Steam Into History’s mission and vision.
Essential Functions:
  1. Identify, define, solicit, and acquire available funding resources
  2. Design, implement, and maintain comprehensive and structured development and fund-raising programs and appropriate marketing strategies
  3. Manage and maintain current donor and sponsor database
  4. Develop strategies for and coordinate all fund-raising activities
  5. Aggressively seek new corporate/foundation funding sources, maintain relationships with donors, and represent the organization in meeting with potential funding sources
  6. Work collaboratively with staff members to identify avenues of economic support for programs/projects
  7. Maintain ongoing contact with staff regarding programs and plans and examine ways for packaging and marketing programs to philanthropic supports
  8. Maintain close working relationships with the Board and the active, ongoing, and smooth functioning as it seeks to increase private and public sector funding
  9. Maintain knowledge about the external environment as it relates to historical, education, and tourism-based organizations
  10. Participate in tourism and other relevant organizations, remaining visible in the community
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business administration, or related field
  • 4 years of related experience including knowledge of annual giving
  • Proven experience in building sponsorship/donor contributions
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and ability to meet people with ease
  • Strong organizational skills, well-disciplined, able to work under pressure of many priorities and meeting deadlines
  • Knowledge of marketing strategies and techniques
  • Knowledge of long-range planning processes
Job Information:
  • Position Type: full-time, hours and days necessary to achieve performance goals including weekends
  • Location: New Freedom, PA
  • Travel: 50% outside office primarily in York County and northern Maryland; occasional outside local area
