Description:
The Pre-Surgery Closer coordinates the pre-surgery experience of patients under the direction of the Pre-Surgery Supervisor as a part of the health care team.  Responsible for communicating completed assigned tasks to the Supervisor and for following the established organization and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines of OSS Health. Supports the philosophy and goals of OSS Health.

Requirements and Responsibilities:
Education:
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
 
Qualifications:
  • At least one (1) year medical office experience in an EMR environment required (preferably in orthopaedics).
  • Incumbents with background as a Medical Assistant must:
    • Maintain MA certification and BLS
    • Maintain venipuncture and EKG certifications (obtain within 6 months if not current)
  • Proficient in computer use, including but not limited to Microsoft Outlook and Electronic Medical Record experience.
  • Independent judgment necessary to work in accordance with department practices and general directives received by Supervisors.
  • Effective and efficient organization and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, which frequently involve collaborating with physicians, management/leadership and other organizational personnel.
  • Ability to work independently and utilize time management, prioritization, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to alter schedule to accommodate departmental needs as required
  • Previous surgical scheduling experience preferred
  • Service oriented, approachable, and responsive to customer needs
  • Assumes responsibility for own personal continuing education and developmental needs. 
 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Schedules History and Physical, Medical Clearance and post –op appointments with appropriate medical provider.
  • Assesses type of surgery and priority per team to determine facility and potential dates for surgery.
  • Schedules any necessary patient education classes
  • Provides instructions to patient regarding expectations for history and physical appointment and/or medical clearance appointment.
  • Able to apply algorithm to medical history to insure proper testing was obtained
  • Applies surgical protocol/policy to insure proper information and assessments are completed
  • Gathers lab results, EKG, outside reports and medical clearance
  • Notify patient of MRSA/MSSA results following appropriate protocol for treatment and scheduling
  • Communicates timeline with patient and/or caregiver.
  • Effectively communicates with necessary provider any challenges in obtaining necessary tests or documentation.
  • Collects and documents patient care data and reports abnormalities to Anesthesia Department, PAT department, and/or the Surgeon/Team as needed.
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for care provided and tasks assigned.
  • Communicates significant clinical issues, consistent with the organizational policies, procedures, guidelines and mission, to Supervisors.
  • Manages patient assignments effectively. 
  • Utilizes appropriate safety and infection control practices.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding patients and all aspects of care.
  • Participates in educational activities, unit meetings, and quality initiatives.
  • Maintains skills as demonstrated through competency testing.
  • Provides accurate, time appropriate, patient report to healthcare providers caring for or assuming care of the patient.
  • Accurately completes all documentation and/or reports within the shift of occurrence and immediately communicates critical incidents to the appropriate director, manager, or supervisor.
  • Documents in the medical record per hospital protocol, and documents in a clear, accurate, detailed manner.
  • Consistently adheres to all policies, procedures, and all federal and state regulations.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding patients and all aspects of care.
