Job Description

Description: The Medical Technologist performs phlebotomy and laboratory testing.  Has knowledge of the clinical significance of results, monitors and understands operation of the instrumentation, and reports results accurately and rapidly.  Responsible for following established organization and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines of the hospital.  Supports the philosophy and goals of OSS Orthopedic Hospital.

Qualifications and Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related field with certification from American Society of Clinical Pathologists, or equivalent certification.
  • Detail oriented, able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Able to effectively and efficiently make use of time and resources.
  • Must be able to plan and organize work.
  • Physically and emotionally capable of performing position responsibilities.  Manual dexterity a must.
  • Training in computer operation.
  • Have professional and effective communication skills and be able to promote effective communication at all levels.
  • Assumes responsibility for own personal continuing education and developmental needs.]
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Establishes and maintains strong positive relationships with patients, other OSS employees and Medical staff.
  • Performs all clinical testing as assigned.
  • Records and reports test results accurately and promptly.
  • Performs and interprets quality control testing following established guidelines.
  • Maintains a high level of quality assurance.
  • Coordinates and evaluates new reagents, procedures and equipment as requested by manager.
  • Performs routine scheduled and specialized maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Performs basic troubleshooting on laboratory analyzers.
  • Manages an efficient workstation, keeps area clean and stocked with supplies.
  • Maintains a safe environment following hospital policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a high level of quality assurance.
  • Reports all quality concerns according to policy.
  • Utilizes appropriate safety and infection control practices.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding patients and all aspects of care.
  • Participates in educational activities, unit meetings, and quality initiatives.
  • Maintains skills as demonstrated through competency testing.
